A Northern Departure

Luke 21:11 NKJV — “And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.

Solar flares, polar shifts and continental drifts. All recipes for an epic action adventure disaster movie. We’ve seen them before with “Deep Impact, Armageddon and San Andreas” but the two films that deal with solar phenomenons and climate change are “The Day After Tomorrow and 2012.”

The premise of both films is a discovery of a catastrophic disaster and the hero tries to warn the leaders to get ready but ignore the hero’s pleas and the world faces the calamity before it. In many ways this is Hollywood telling us that these scenarios they present in these films are going to happen but the problem with these two particular films is that they are based on science that cannot be verified or substantiated. For example, the film “2012” is based on a prediction the ancient Mayans had given. Predicting that on December 21, 2012, an end to an age and the end to civilization as we know it will come. It was great entertainment for movie goers but the fulfillment of the Mayan prophecy fell flat. We are now in May of 2019, the Mayans, obviously, got it wrong. “The Day After Tomorrow” is based on climate change gone amuck and theories that still can’t be verified by the majority of the science community. Again, good entertainment but an instant ice age may be a little far fetched.

Luke 21:25-26 NKJV — “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; “men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Is the ice ready to overtake and claim the Earth again? Recent studies on our climate have revealed a change with the North Pole.  The Earth’s north magnetic pole has been moving from its old location in Northern Canada towards Siberia and there is a growing concern among scientists that the weakening of the Earth’s magnetic field could someday cause its north and south poles to flip and that could lead to global chaos. The Earth’s magnetic north has been moving ever since it was first discovered in 1831. This movement began long before anyone came up with the terms of “global warming or climate change.” It’s driven by molten iron moving deep beneath the Earth’s crust.

Now magnetic north is moving so quickly that it forced the world’s geomagnetism experts to update the World Magnetic Model a year early. That model is the basis for modern navigation, for ships and planes, satellites, smartphones and it helps birds and other animals to navigate as well.

If Earth’s magnetic field were to decay significantly, scientists say it could collapse altogether and flip polarity, changing magnetic north to south and south to north. The planet’s magnetic poles are believed to have flipped before in earth history, but never in a time with such a dependence on technology and many scientists now say a flip of north and south is looking more and more certain.

In a recent interview with CBN and Pat Robertson, Dr. Hugh Ross, an astronomer and founder of “Reasons to Believe,” commented, “These reversals we’ve been hearing about, they have happened several hundred times in the past half-billion years of earth’s history. And we already have a pretty good idea of what’s going to happen during a reversal. It’ll be similar to what happened in 1859 when we got hit by a big solar flare.”

The solar flare that hit in 1859 is known as the Carrington Event. It was a powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar coronal mass ejection, or CME, that hit Earth’s magnetosphere and caused one of the largest geomagnetic storms on record on September 1 and 2, 1859. A solar storm of this same magnitude occurring today would cause widespread electrical disruptions, blackouts, and damage to the world’s electrical grids.

The magnetic field is important to the Earth as it provides protection from solar flares and the sun’s harmful rays. How can we prepare ourselves for something that is out of our hands. Dr. Hugh Ross cannot predict when exactly a reversal will happen but he believes the Earth is overdue for such an event. The Lord spoke of calamities we would experience in the last days and we must put our trust in God and pray for divine protection from His Holy Spirit that we will endure these events.

We need to remind ourselves with the words of Jesus and remember that He is always with us;

Luke 21:28 NKJV — “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
