On a hot summer day in Texas, President Kennedy brought some heat of his own. While speaking on the campus of Rice University the challenge was given to land on the moon by the end of the 1960’s and the space race had it’s official start. The Soviet Union had gotten a head start with the launch of the Sputnik satellite but our national pride was on the line. On July 20, 1969 the ‘Eagle’ had landed and American Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon.

What was witnessed by millions around the world was a fulfillment of a dream that overwhelmed the United States with national pride. As Neil Armstrong placed the US Flag on the surface of the moon, it was proof that mankind had landed on a planetary body outside the boundaries of Earth and we had won the race to the moon against the Soviet Union.

50 years ago we landed on the moon…or did we? Was the whole Apollo 11 mission fake? Where did this moon landing “conspiracy” come from? It took 400,000 NASA employees and contractors to put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon in 1969 but only one man to spread the idea that it was all a hoax. His name was Bill Kaysing. According to Kaysing It began as “a hunch, an intuition”, before turning into “a true conviction” that the US lacked the technical prowess to make it to the moon (or, at least, to the moon and back). In 1976, he self-published a pamphlet called, “We Never Went to the Moon: America’s Thirty Billion Dollar Swindle,” which sought evidence for his conviction by means of grainy photocopies and ludicrous theories. Yet somehow he established a few perennials that are kept alive to this day in Hollywood movies and Fox News documentaries, Reddit forums and YouTube channels.

Of course, the 1978 film, “Capricorn One,” which deals with a fake Mars landing, added to the growing theories that the Apollo 11 moon landing actually happened in a warehouse in California. Despite the extraordinary volume of evidence including 842 pounds of moon rock collected across six missions; corroboration from Russia, Japan and China; and images from the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showing the tracks made by the astronauts in the moondust, belief in the moon-hoax conspiracy has blossomed since 1969.

In our current digital age it is easy to disbelieve anything that may happen on Earth. God reminds us in His Holy Word when He instructed the prophet Daniel; 

 

 

 

Daniel 12:4 NKJV — “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

 

 

 

In the 243 year history of the United States we have witnessed extraordinary feats of technical advancement so, it shouldn’t be a surprise that mankind can have the knowledge to go to the moon.

Now plans are being made to revisit the moon as well as sending astronauts to the planet Mars. Since July of 2011, when the space shuttle program ended, NASA has worked on upgrading the agency so that when the time comes to venture to the moon and Mars it will be fully prepared. Many remain skeptical and no doubt there will be many more conspiracy theorists that will claim that any achievement made by the United States and NASA will be considered a hoax. 

 

 

 

God does remind us that we live in a time when we can easily be deceived. 

 

 

 

2 Timothy 4:3-4 NKJV — For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

The summer of 1969 brought the world together to witness an amazing spectacle ever achieved by mankind. Whether you believe or not, the overwhelming evidence of the moon landing only proves that it did happen. The bravery of astronauts Neill Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins launched us into a new era of exploration. We should celebrate one of the greatest milestones of human history. Going to the moon wasn’t easy and the challenges that are ahead will be interesting.

“To boldly go where no one has gone before…” Yes, I know, Star Trek, again!? But we must be aware that God created the planets, stars and the moon and we should try to explore and enjoy all of God’s creations. We took a big step in 1969 and left a footprint to all who may see it that we have been there.
