“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”
Archbishop Malachy of Armagh – 1139

2020 and the dawn of a new decade is upon us and many are asking, “What does the future hold for us?” A good question that doesn’t bring an easy answer. More and more people are turning to news articles, social media, psychics and religious leaders to find or answer questions about the future. Is the end of the world happening soon? What are the signs? When does all this take place? This question was asked by the disciples to Jesus.

Matthew 24:3 NKJV — Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

The end of the age. Is it here and how does the Pope fit into all this? The new year has brought attention to a prophecy given by Archbishop Malachy in 1139.

Saint Malachy was the Archbishop of Armagh, to whom several miracles were attributed to in the 12th-century. In 1139, Malachy went to Rome from Ireland to give an account of his affairs, when he reportedly received a strange vision about the future, including the names of 112 future popes. His prediction for the 112th and current pope – Francis – is rather shocking. The prediction (given at the top of the article) mentions the name of the last Pope as “Peter the Roman,” and that the seven-hilled city (Rome) would be destroyed and the end would come. If Francis is the name of the current Pope, where did the name Peter come from?

The father of the current pope was Pietro, or Peter, and was from Italy even though the family moved to Argentina and Francis took over the reins in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013. During his first address as the leader of the Vatican, Pope Francis made the following address from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.

“You all know that the duty of the Conclave was to give a bishop to Rome. It seems that my brother Cardinals have come almost to the ends of the Earth to get him, but here we are. I thank you for the welcome that has come from the diocesan community of Rome.”
Pope Francis – March 13, 2013

His reference to “the end of the Earth” caused quite a storm, with news outlet Rome Reports claiming: “Pope Francis is now at the centre of apocalyptic prophecies” on their YouTube channel. Later the reporter cleared things up, adding in 2013: “Saint Malachy spoke about the Pope from the end of the world,” if this sounds familiar, it’s because they are the same words Pope Francis said on the balcony the night he was elected. The clarification was vague but it’s also in line with other “grey” statements Rome and the Vatican have given in the past.

There have been questions over the authenticity of Malachy’s predictions. The prophecy of the popes was first published by Benedictine monk Arnold Wion in 1595, attributing the claims to Malacy. Given the very accurate description of popes up to around 1590 and lack of accuracy for the popes that follow, historians generally conclude that the alleged prophecy is a fabrication written shortly before publication.

When speaking of the end times Jesus had this to say;

Mark 13:31-33 NKJV — “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.

Like the prophecies of Nostradamus, Malachy’s prophecy can be interpreted in many ways but as the Word of God points out – Mark 13:32 NKJV — “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. – then we should realize that the future is in God’s hands and only He knows the time when all end time prophecy will be fulfilled. We must pray and seek the Lord in all things concerning the past, present and future. Only He can give us the peace that we need in these turbulent times.

If Pope Francis is the last Pontiff then we should look at this as an obvious lifeline God is giving us and we should prepare ourselves for the upcoming tribulation we are going to face.

Mark 13:35-37 NKJV — “Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— “lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. “And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”
