Departures

1 Timothy 4:1-2 NKJV — Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

In the post 9/11 world it can be chaotic to catch a flight. At the airport we look at the departure screen to make sure everything is on time. We see the flight number, the gate assignment and it matches the ticket and boarding pass we have in our hand. There is no reason not to believe that the plane we are boarding will take us to our desired destination. There’s only one problem, you’ve changed your mind. The destination you chose is no longer a desired place for you. You change flights and hope that the new destination will be just as good as the one you walked away from.

Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV — “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. “Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

We all have the ability to choose a way of life and sometimes, for some, it may take multiple choices before we find the way we want to live. Some are happy but unfortunately there are many who are not. Living for God is also a choice. A choice not only made with the mind but also with the heart.

Recently two prominent Christian influencers have had a change of heart and have publicly renounced their faith in God and Jesus.

Marty Sampson, a worship music writer, singer, and active member of Hillsong has publicly denounced his faith on social media. His announcement comes just weeks after well-known Christian author Joshua Harris announced his departure from Christianity, both sharing their news over Instagram. Sampson, who has notably written songs for Hillsong Worship, Hillsong United, Delirious and Young & Free, shared a now-deleted post to Instagram, explaining how he is “losing” his faith.

The following is a portion of a transcript of the post Sampson made from Relevant Magazine:

“Time for some real talk. I’m genuinely losing my faith, and it doesn’t bother me. Like, what bothers me now is nothing. I am so happy now, so at peace with the world. It’s crazy.

This is a soapbox moment so here I go … How many preachers fall? Many. No one talks about it. How many miracles happen. Not many. No one talks about it. Why is the Bible full of contradictions? No one talks about it. How can God be love yet send four billion people to a place, all ‘coz they don’t believe? No one talks about it. Christians can be the most judgmental people on the planet—they can also be some of the most beautiful and loving people. But it’s not for me.”

After emphasizing he truly wants answers to his questions, Sampson admitted he’s “struggling with many parts of the belief system that seem so incoherent with common human morality.” He claims that the post was not intended to draw attention to himself but that’s exactly what happened. Instead of discussing his concerns and questions with theologians, counsellors or pastors in private, Sampson posted his criticism of Christianity for the whole world to see. With no concern of whom the post might affect Sampson’s action is being perceived as a self serving one. Many fans and followers of Hillsong are stunned by Sampson’s renouncement and may have caused many to question their faith in Christ.

Romans 16:17-18 NKJV — Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.

Looking for the truth shouldn’t be a problem but the truth Marty Sampson is looking for is based on humanistic global values which has proven to be in conflict with God’s values outlined throughout His Holy Word. Asking questions is the only way to get answers but people losing their faith because they are not getting the answers they desired only means that they can’t accept the truth.

Ephesians 5:6-8 NKJV — Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

Satan wants you to give up on God and wants you to believe that living with your own principles are just enough to make it to the destination he reserved for all that reject God. Darkness, eternal peril, the lake of fire…whatever you call it…it is a place called hell.

Whatever the reason, Marty Sampson and many others have fallen away, we must double down and pray for those who are being deceived by the spoils of the world. God gave us the free will to choose a life of righteousness and a promise of everlasting life with the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour or a life without God filled with doubt and no assurance of a long and peaceful life. God is a just God and those who follow and keep His commandments He will never abandon. For those who have and will walk away from the Lord will have a heavy consequence but only if they don’t repent. Let’s pray they do before it’s too late. If we put our trust in a relationship with Jesus then the destination that we will reach will be everything we ever hoped for.

Proverbs 2:1-5 NKJV — My son, if you receive my words,

And treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom,

And apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment,

And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver,

And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,

And find the knowledge of God.
