Peeling Away

Isaiah 24:17-20 NKJV — Fear and the pit and the snare

Are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth. And it shall be

That he who flees from the noise of the fear

Shall fall into the pit,

And he who comes up from the midst of the pit

Shall be caught in the snare;

For the windows from on high are open,

And the foundations of the earth are shaken. The earth is violently broken,

The earth is split open,

The earth is shaken exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard,

And shall totter like a hut;

Its transgression shall be heavy upon it,

And it will fall, and not rise again.

Globalists from around the world claim that hurricanes, winter storms and almost all of the Earth’s natural events or disasters, depending on the level of destruction associated with the event, are caused by human activity and too many cows. As silly the cow blame is, maybe these globalist should remember that in the Bible there are predictions of disasters happening because of the disobedience of mankind and it’s rebellion towards God. In some respects the globalists have some things correct but if we read again the passage written by the prophet Isaiah, God will be shaking the Earth as a judgement for an unrepentant human race. The time for this massive earthquake may be closer than we realize.

We have seen the evidence of past earthquakes. The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku was a magnitude 9.0–9.1 undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan. The 1886 Charleston, South Carolina earthquake occurred with an estimated magnitude of 6.9–7.3 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). The intraplate earthquake caused 60 deaths and between $5 million and $6 million in damage to 2,000 buildings in the Southeastern United States. Two examples of earthquakes happening at any given time. Now, off the coast of Portugal, the Earth’s crust might be peeling in two.

In 1969, a giant earthquake off the coast of Portugal kicked up a tsunami that killed over a dozen people. Some 200 years prior, an even larger earthquake hit the same area, killing around 100,000 people and destroying the city of Lisbon. Two earthquakes in the same spot over a couple hundred years is not cause for alarm. But what puzzled seismologists about these tremors was that they began in relatively flat beds of the ocean away from any faults or cracks in the Earth’s crust where tectonic plates slip past each other, releasing energy and causing earthquakes. So what’s causing the rumbles under a seemingly quiet area?

One theory is that a tectonic plate is peeling into two layers. The top peeling off the bottom layer. A phenomenon that has never been observed before, a group of scientists reported in April at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly held in Vienna. This peeling may be creating a new subduction zone, or an area in which one tectonic plate is rammed beneath another, according to their abstract.

The peeling is likely driven by a water-absorbing layer in the middle of the tectonic plate, according to National Geographic. This layer might have undergone a geological process called serpentinization, in which water that seeps in through cracks causes a layer to transform into soft green minerals. Now, this transformed layer might be causing enough weakness in the plate for the bottom layer to peel away from the top layer. That peeling could lead to deep fractures that trigger a tiny subduction zone, National Geographic reported. This group isn’t the first to propose this idea, but it’s the first to provide some data on it. They tested their hypothesis with two-dimensional models, and their preliminary results showed that this type of activity is indeed possible but is still yet to be proven.

Jesus did say that we would experience earthquakes in various places. Mexico, Alaska, Indonesia and Peru, to name a few, are always prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity and the frequency of these events has raised an alarm around the world and is powerless to prevent them. Portugal may be the next anticipated hotspot but the wait is something we’ll have to endure. Today, tomorrow or a hundred years from now, when the Portuguese quake finally rocks the Earth, the landscape will look entirely different.

While scientist wait for the next Asian-Pacific megaquake or the “Big One” in California we must prepare for the worse with prayer and with trust in God that the Holy Spirit will give us the wisdom to plan and help others if we were ever to experience an earthquake or any natural disaster that may hit in the region we live in. The “Portuguese Peel” may be unique but the book of Revelation does predict something like the “Peel” occurring during the 7 year Tribulation;

Revelation 6:12-14 NKJV — I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.

Our planet is a fragile one but also very resilient as God intended it to be. Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and winter storms are God’s way of getting our attention but of course, many skeptics discount this reasoning with the belief of globalist theories such as climate change and oil drilling for the calamities that have befallen the Earth. Genesis 1:1 tells us that God created the heavens and the Earth and as believers and followers of Jesus we take comfort that God knows the pains of the Earth and has left a blueprint of His eternal plan with His Holy Word. Putting our trust in Jesus Christ and accept Him as Lord and Saviour we can have the security of His protection through His Holy Spirit. The Lord gave us this promise to reassure us;

Matthew 24:13-14 NKJV — “But he who endures to the end shall be saved. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
