The “Ism” of Deceit

Proverbs 22:6 NKJV — Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

It’s the first day of school. Your young child is beginning a journey that will encompass their life for the next 12 years. School supplies, new clothes and the ever important lunch money to get through the day. What will he or she learn? We put our trust in a system that we hope will benefit our child and in most cases it’s a blind trust we have but what exactly are they being taught? As parents, do we understand what the curriculum is?

Since the 1960s, the United States Supreme Court has found it unconstitutional for public schools to teach religious practices such as prayer but today, mindfulness meditation, a Buddhist religious practice similar to prayer is promoted by schools nationwide. Why aren’t the courts intervening? Because promoters assert, as the Associated Press did recently, that “Western culture has secularized” this “centuries-old” religious practice. Another sign of the latter days that the Apostle Paul warned us about in Second Timothy;

2 Timothy 4:3-4 NKJV — For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

But what does it mean to “secularize” mindfulness? It boils down to a simple change of vocabulary. Promoters drop the terms “Buddhism” and “meditation” and add the terms “neuroscience” and “scientific research.” Meanwhile, the same practice is taught in both public schools and Buddhist basics classes.

Trudy Goodman, founder of Insight LA, California, confesses in an interview with Vincent and Emily Horn of BuddhistGeeks.com that what she advertises as “secular” mindfulness for public schools is really, in her words, “stealth Buddhism.” Although the “secular” classes use a “different vocabulary,” getting children to engage in the same practice of mindfulness that is taught in Buddhist classes transforms students “whether they want it or not,” and many go on to enroll in explicitly Buddhist classes.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 NKJV — Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

To introduce religious practices by code names, misinformation and lies sets a bad precedent for our nationwide public school system, that being said, this particular practice is supported by some in congress and by celebrities like Goldie Hawn. Hare Krishna, Hinduism, Buddhism, Scientology and many other religions other than Judaism and Christianity rely on diversion and trickery to deploy their agenda and to make an end run around the US Supreme Court. It is a deception that could harm the children who attend our public schools.

Public school mindfulness programs often pair the term mindfulness with “heartfulness.” Mindful Schools is one such program, founded in 2010 in Northern California, and now providing on-site or on-line training to teachers and children in 48 states and 43 countries. The Mindful Schools website embeds a promotional video, “Healthy Habits of Mind,” which depicts what heartfulness looks like in the classroom, in short, it looks a lot like prayer: Instead of asking children to pray for God to bless sick classmates, the teacher “secularizes” prayer by substituting the language of sending good thoughts, while leading children to perform symbolic gestures such as folding their hands in a traditional prayer gesture and closing their eyes, while reciting companion phrases that implies or suggests prayer.

The question that should be raised is, “who are the children praying to?” Surely it can’t be Jesus or God for that would give the perception of religion in the classroom which is a violation of US law. The term “moment of silence” is used to disguise the insertion of chants and mantras that are commonly used in eastern religions. The philosophy of “open mindedness” and “being one with the universe” is a far cry from being reliant on God and what He offers which is salvation and eternal life through His only begotten son Jesus Christ.

When the devil attempted to tempt and persuade Jesus to worship him the Lord rebuked him;

Matthew 4:10 NKJV — Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

The Lord is very clear about whom we should serve. Our children are precious and our future. We must pray for guidance and protection over our loved ones continuously. We must do our due diligence and be informed on what programs the public schools are offering to students and determine if they are appropriate for our children.  Let us be reminded of the commission the Lord gave us and what we should be doing in these latter days;

Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV — And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
