Mark 4:36-38 NKJV — Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Fear, it’s probably the one emotion that grips us the hardest. It affects everyone. Christian to atheist, no one is excluded. The unknown will always captivate us especially, when our lives are in danger. Our adrenaline starts running and the anxiety pushes us to a state of panic. Our faith begins to dwindle and we begin to feel that God doesn’t care about our plight. Why are we letting fear take a hold of our lives?
The waters (the immediate future) we are sailing into is really unsettling and scary. Questions are being raised minute by minute and no one has the right answer. In the blink of an eye our world and our way of life changed and the adjustments people have to make are inconvenient and uncomfortable. The mainstream media and social media have piled on the doom and gloom rhetoric causing people to panic and to act irrationally.
Empty shelves at grocery stores and essentials such as eggs and yes, even toilet paper are in short supply due to unrealistic government policies and the fear that government restrictions will be implemented where access to essential supplies will be difficult to obtain or will be denied. The response to restock the shelves has been slow and it has given a rude glimpse of what life is like in a socialistic country like Cuba or Venezuela. Fear has taken hold and somehow we have lost faith.
The storm had overtaken them. The boat was sinking and their lives were in danger. The disciples’ faith had turned into fear and they had forgotten that the solution to their peril was with them all along. Instead of trusting the Lord for their deliverance, they questioned Him and wondered if He even cared about their pending fate.
Mark 4:39-41 NKJV — Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Even though Jesus calmed the storm and the sea before them, the disciples still had questions. Much like we do today, no matter how many times the Lord opens a door for us we still feel like it isn’t enough. We read the blogs, watch the news and listen to talk radio like it’s gospel and we disregard the message of the real and true Gospel. The Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ is what is needed in a critical time such as this. Many are afraid that life will be coming to an end and down deep in their hearts they know they are not ready to stand before God and account for their lives. The “lost” without God are aimlessly wandering around in fear not knowing where their next meal is coming from and if this pandemic we’re experiencing or the next one will be the end of us. The Lord has a message we all need to hear for only God knows what tomorrow will bring.
Matthew 6:25-34 NKJV — “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? “Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; “and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. “Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ “For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
There is no need to fear. The end of the world is not at hand but this is a clear indication that it will be coming soon. There is no need to panic or to hoard essential supplies when there are others who are in need. We are all in the same boat but we as believers and followers of Christ have the reassurance that He will meet our needs.
Like a lighthouse that guides ships away from treacherous rocks, let the Holy Spirit guide you into the safe harbor the Lord provides so that you may have peace.
May the Holy Spirit be the wind in your sails as you follow the Lord into calm seas.
Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV — Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
